Thanks to all who attended the annual NICU/SCN Picnic on October 4th. This event was a big success with great weather, activities and reunions between many families and friends. Our “Fall Festival” included Circle Time Live, Ms. Fancy paints, the wonderful juggler and entertainer, Jen Slaw, a great barbecue and new this year – Pony Rides!! The Stonybrook Day Camp graciously donated the facilities and once again, the Bouncy Pillow was enjoyed by all. Artistically decorated pumpkins and sand art offered creative opportunities for all. We hope everyone had a great time. We always love to see the babies grow up! All of the staff here at Morristown looks forward every year to the occasion and hope that all the families do as well. See you next year!!!!

Retinopathy of Prematurity – Update 2008

Robert Lopez, M.D.
Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology
College of Physicians and Surgeons
Columbia University

March 6, 2008 – Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a leading cause of childhood visual impairment which, when severe, can cause permanent visual impairment and blindness. In the United States, ROP causes an estimated 2100 pediatric cases of visual impairment, including 700 cases of permanent blindness, per year. ROP primarily affects premature infants weighing about 2¾ pounds (1250 grams) or less that are born before 31 weeks of gestation.

In ongoing efforts to address the management and prevention of ROP, MidAtlantic Neonatology Associates (MANA) proudly sponsored a special dinner conference for neonatal healthcare providers in the greater New Jersey region on ROP. The guest lecture was given by Dr. Robert Lopez, a retinal specialist with extensive experience in managing severe ROP in premature infants. This educational and collaborative event was videotaped to help ensure that activities such as these can continue to serve as an ongoing resource for the healthcare community. This is one of a series of special dinner conferences featuring guest lecturers sponsored by MANA.
